Mobile Design

Tools: Figma

My Role: User Experience • User Interface

Duration: June 2021 - July 2021

 What is the problem?

During the pandemic, golf saw a surge of new players. In fact, according to the UGF (National Golf Foundation) over 500,000 new players joined the game.

But with new players, there are some issues* that comes with that, but namely the disconnect between new and current players. So how can we help new players while enjoying a round of golf with more experienced players?

The Challenge

With many newcomers joining, it can be difficult to learn and play with experienced players on the course. Gimme is an app that bridges the gap together so any level of players can enjoy a round together.

Design Process

Stage 1: Empathize

Competitive Analysis

Looking at golf mobile apps competitors such as The Grint, 18 Birdies, and Hole 19

Secondary Research

  • Looking at a clean aesthetic designs with simple interactions

  • Apps such as Duolingo, Skillest, and Nike Run app. These apps integrate GPS interactions, tracking, shops, and limited Ads during use

Interviews

  • Conversation with golfers in different stages of their skill

  • Speaking with individuals about their needs, frustrations, and wants

Some questions I asked the interviewers were:

  • Are you a new golfer?

  • What got you into golf?

  • What is something that's frustrating while playing golf?

  • What apps do you use on the course?

  • What are some things you love and dislike about the app you currently use?

Stage 2: Analysis

  • Afraid of judgment by other players

  • App provides these golfers how to play the course based on the players distances

  • Enjoy mini games with all level of players

  • Frustrated with slow pace of play

Other notes:

  2. Wants to enjoy the round with fun games to play with friends

    (game within a game)

  3. met life-long friends through golf

  4. used golf as a physical activity to walk (Approx. 4.09 miles per round)

  5. One Interviewee said:

“Just want to meet people and have fun”

Stage 3: Ideate

Initial Drawings

Initial Drawings

  • By studying the competition, a layout with a bottom navigation is a popular choice because people use their phones with one hand

  • Big and simple CTAs are popular and common throughout the industry

  • Create a way for users to sign up quickly and with others

Stage 4: Validate & Test

Initial test were purely aesthetic with the users based on 3 iterations

1st Iteration.png

This yellow and tan theme was an homage to the vintage days of golf. Inspired by Ben hogan and Arnold Palmer whom were fashion icons in the sport of golf in the 60s. The idea was to attract the older generation, but also introduce the newer players about the history.

3rd Iteration.png

White as the main color and accent green to provide more of a modern and cleaner look.

Still going for modern, but the blue brings more softness to the overall feel.

80% of the users voted for the 3rd iteration mainly due to
color palette & CTA placements

Stage 5: Finalize

Gimme’s experience allows different level of players to come together and enjoy a round of golf

Next steps are further testing with beginners and occasional golfers to more usability tests.

Thank you for taking a look!

Looking forward to connect with you!
